Description from the seller

Tshimbuya Axe, Chokwe
Angola
Total length: 48 cm
Maximum width (blade and haft): 25 cm
Period: Early 20th Century
Provenance: Leiloeira Côrte Real auction house - Porto - Portugal

This axe is much more a scepter than a functional axe. Village chiefs, diviners and courtiers nearby owned them, not slung over the shoulder as the Congo's herminettes, but held in the hands, with the superb engravings visible to all. Probably from the late 19th century, with an excellent provenance from a Portuguese auction house of which Angola was one of its colonies.
