Description from the seller

Mangbetu sickle knife "trumbash"
Congo, DR Congo
Overall length: 39.7 cm
Materials: forged iron, wood, twisted copper wire, tapestry nails
Period: early 20th century
Provenance: former collection of Sven-Erik Johansson, Varberg - Sweden; Swedish auction house Crafoord Auktioner, Lund

Because of the strong and widespread cultural influence that the Mangbetu exerted over their neighboring populations, this type of weapon was widely spread and was known under many names in addition to nagata, notably mambele, nagala, nambale, dupa and trumbash.
Historically, Nagata blades were used in clashes between the Mangbetu and the Zande, but in the 20th century they were used for peaceful purposes and brandished in ceremonial dances. They were also used as insignia of dignity and offered as diplomatic gifts. Their refined details and finishes gave their bearer a certain distinction and contributed to his reputation and wealth. (Schildkrout & Keim, African Reflections: Art From Northeastern Zaire, 1990; Vanderstraete, Monnaies Objets d'Échange, 2016).

Superb Mangbetu trumbash decorated with tapestry nails and twisted yellow copper wire.

The last two photographs show a king with his Nagata sickle knife offset and men armed with their trumbash.

May, at the bidder's request, be sold with the invoice from the auction house Crafoord Auktioner - Lund

Careful, insured delivery with tracking number.
