Description from the seller
晄山 Kozan 銅蟲花瓶 Dochu Kabin Copper Two Carp Vase with Original Box (Tomobako)
銅蟲花瓶 Dochu Kabin
A traditional craft associated with the Hiroshima Domain, dating back to the Edo period. It is characterised by the unique dark brown lustre achieved by hammering a single sheet of copper into shape, smoking it with rice straw, and then polishing it to a shine. This craft is prized for its durability and the distinctive patina it develops over time.
The dark, even sheen of the copper gives this dochu kabin its grounded presence, the two koi in silver and gold emerging in low relief with a measured clarity that reflects the traditional Hiroshima craft in which a single sheet of copper is hammered into form, smoked with rice straw, and polished to achieve its characteristic surface; the vase attributed to Kozan carries this quiet discipline in both texture and motif, and its original tomobako accompanies it, allowing the piece to retain the steady, enduring atmosphere that such work develops as its patina deepens over time.
Box dimensions: 8.5" x 8.6" x 10.4" / 21.8cm x 22cm x 26.5cm
