Jules Dedet, better known as “L'Atlas,” is a French street artist born in 1978.
Meticulous, in search of a certain purity in both form and the choice of colors used, L'Atlas expresses through his life and his art the Asian philosophy of duality as a source of complementarity. Through L'Atlas's almost hypnotic works, one finds a dichotomy between black and white.
Refusing academic studies and a conformist life, L'Atlas left his art history studies to devote himself entirely to his love of writing. He chose to travel to Morocco and then Egypt to study the art of Arabic calligraphy with renowned masters and teachers. Returning to Paris, L'Atlas transposed ancient Arabic techniques with contemporary media—duct tape and spray paint on canvases and posters. He then created a unique and universal signature inspired by the labyrinth, which remains a recurring motif in his works.
These compasses and labyrinths made of gaffer tape (that white tape used on movie sets) applied to the ground are an invitation to reflection. In each of these works, you can always discern a word, more or less concealed, which is one of the inherent characteristics of urban art to which L'Atlas belongs. His works have been exhibited in numerous museums and institutions such as the Centre Pompidou, the Palais de Tokyo, and the Grand Palais.
L'Atlas is among the major names in street art.
Ideal to collect with Banksy, KAWS, Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst, Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama, Ai Weiwei, JR, Shepard Fairey, Invader, Keith Haring, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Richard Prince, Anish Kapoor, Gerhard Richter, Cindy Sherman, Olafur Eliasson, Daniel Buren, Maurizio Cattelan, Tracey Emin, Banks Violette, Ron English, Vhils, Blu, Os Gemeos, Swoon, Blek le Rat, Miss.Tic, Ernest Pignon-Ernest, JonOne
