A vivid, horizontal composition alive with movement and energy. Against a deeply textured background of layered blues and teals, a single luminous form bursts from the centre of the canvas, built from fiery oranges, burning reds, and sharp yellows. The shape is fluid and creature-like, part flame, part sea creature, part something altogether its own. A sweeping curl of yellow trails behind it like a tail or a current, giving the whole piece a sense of velocity and life. The blue ground shifts in tone from dark and moody on the left to brighter, more aqueous on the right, as though light is breaking through water. There is a rawness to the brushwork and a joyfulness in the colour that makes this piece impossible to ignore.

This one surprised me while I was making it. I started with the blue and just kept going, and suddenly there was this creature in the middle of it all. It feels like something from the deep, something moving fast and free. The title came to me because it felt like music underwater, a symphony of the sea.

Sonia Anton is a Romanian-Australian artist whose passion for painting was shaped from an early age, growing up alongside her mother, a celebrated artist whose work left a lasting impression. Having lived across the world from Australia to Mexico and in different continents, Sonia brings a richness of experience and perspective to every canvas. Surrounded by creativity and self-expression from childhood, she naturally found her own voice through paint and colour. Her work is driven by a deep love of colour, and a more recent fascination with texture, which she explores with growing boldness and confidence.
