Description from the seller
Lot of 5 artisanal boxes made of bone and horn – India / South Asia
Set of five decorative boxes made from natural material (bone and/or horn) on a wooden frame, embellished with metal elements.
This homogeneous lot features artisanal work characteristic of productions from South Asia (India or nearby region), probably dating from the mid-20th century (circa 1950).
The pieces are distinguished by the variety of their shapes and decorations, as well as by a natural patina accrued with time.
- Large rectangular openwork box
Approximately 12.5 × 7.3 cm – height 4.6 cm
Box composed of vertical slats in a light material. The lid is adorned with a central openwork diamond motif, framed by a metal element. The perimeter is decorated with engraved metal friezes. Together they evoke an incense or potpourri box.
- Octagonal box with inlaid decoration
Diameter about 10.5 cm – height 5 cm
Eight-sided box featuring a symmetrical decor made of almond-shaped inlays, probably in darker horn. The center of the lid is outlined by a beaded frieze. Metal closure on the front.
- Small rectangular box with rounded lid (figurative decoration)
Approximately 6.5 × 4.5 cm – height 2 cm
Box with a domed lid, decorated with an engraved or drawn scene depicting a figure and an animal in a stylized landscape. Delicate workmanship, Oriental-inspired.
- Small round box with beaded decoration
Diameter about 6 cm – height 3.5 cm
Turned box with segmented decoration. The lid features a central metal button, surrounded by a beaded frieze. Alternating light and darker tones giving depth to the whole.
- Small square box with metal clasp
Approximately 4.7 cm – height 2.7 cm
Small case, with a slightly domed lid. Openwork decoration on the upper part and contrasting side bands. Functional metal clasp.
