Keil belonged to the first generation of the Berlin Young Wild Ones. Drastic, dynamic and garish colorfulness already characterize his early works, which can indeed be regarded as testimonies of the early phase of West German Neo-Expressionism. With Joan Miró, in whose studio he was often a guest during his stays on Mallorca, Keil recognized how poetic associations connect with Mediterranean colority.

Keil zählte zur ersten Generation der Jungen Wilden Berlins. Drastik, Dynamik und grelle Farbigkeit zeichnen bereits seine frühen Werke aus, die durchaus als Zeugnisse der Frühphase des westdeutschen Neoexpressionismus gelten können. Bei Joan Miró, in dessen Atelier er bei seinen Aufenthalten auf Mallorca häufig Gast war, erkannte Keil, wie sich poetische Assoziationen mit mediterraner Farbigkeit verbinden.
