Description from the seller
Designed by Eugene Bertolli – a splendid original from Napier’s “Golden Era.” This three-strand necklace captivates with its elaborately twisted links in a structured rope motif and faceted faux pearls. A true collectible for lovers of Mid-Century Modern style.
Brand: Napier (signed on the clasp)
Era: 1960s
Designer: Eugene Bertolli
Weight: Solid 230 g – high-quality feel
Condition: Excellent vintage condition,
Feature: Timeless design that is absolutely on trend again today (Boho/Old Money Style).
Special note on the clasp: To guarantee the security of this heavy beauty, the original clasp closes extremely tightly. It locks securely and sits absolutely firm – for a safe wearing experience given this weight. (A small mechanical resistance when opening is present, which reinforces safety).
Bertolli was known for treating the clasp not just as a functional part, but as a sculptural design element. The decorative, bloom-like cl ASP on the side is a classic Bertolli feature.
Before becoming a jewelry designer, Bertolli was a sculptor. This is evident in the gold-plated rope chains. They appear “cast” and heavy, with an irregular, almost hand-crafted texture. This play of light and shadow on the metal surface is a signature of his designs.
Bertolli loved combining opulent metalwork with colorful faux gemstones. The use of faceted acrylic resin or glass beads in warm earth tones, paired with heavy gold tones, was typical of his 1960s and 70s collections.
Eugene Bertolli (1923–2015) is regarded as one of the most important designers in the history of American costume jewelry. The desirability of his pieces today stems from his unique approach and his long-standing influence on the Napier brand.
These works are regarded as stable-value art objects that go far beyond simple costume jewelry.
