Description from the seller

Description:
This ceramic incense burner (kōro) by Kurata Kōken (蔵田光憲) presents a bold and sculptural interpretation of traditional form, combining modern design with refined ceramic craftsmanship.
The censer is constructed in a faceted, almost architectural shape, standing on four short, sturdy feet that elevate the body and give it a stable, grounded presence. The sides are articulated with vertical ridges and softly undulating planes, creating a dynamic interplay of light and shadow. One panel features a flowing, wave-like texture, contrasting with the more structured fluted sides.
The surface is finished in a rich, variegated glaze, ranging from deep purplish-brown to subtle metallic tones. The glaze appears slightly matte with areas of soft sheen, suggesting a controlled firing that enhances depth and tonal variation. These color transitions give the piece a quiet complexity and a sense of movement across its surfaces.
The lid is compact and functional, with a small opening for incense smoke, integrating seamlessly with the body while maintaining the overall geometric aesthetic. The slightly irregular contours and hand-finished details reflect the artist’s engagement with both form and material.
As a work by Kurata Kōken, the piece reflects a balance between traditional incense culture and modern ceramic expression, where utility meets sculptural presence.
The censer conveys a sense of strength, restraint, and refined texture, making it both a functional incense vessel and a compelling object of contemporary Japanese ceramic art.
