Beautiful seventeenth-century edition of the Commentaries on the celeblero Canticle of Canticles by the famous Flemish theologian and Orientalist. Complete and detailed commentary of the major biblical text interpreting the depiction of mystical love as a symbolic transfiguration of the union between God and his people. The work, divided into five parts plus a final Compendium, offers a rich allegorical interpretation of the text analyzing the meaning of the verses in a way accessible and clear to all readers. Text in two columns. Beautiful full leather binding of the period. Title in gold on the spine label. Spine with sewn cords entirely decorated with gold friezes. Printer’s mark engraved on the frontispiece. Large Memento Mori vignette at the colophon. Splendid decorative endpieces in woodcut. Dimensions 34x22, pp. 10nn, 376, 30nn. Excellent condition.
