Italian school (XIX) - L'angelo custode

An old and beautiful oil painting on canvas from an Italian school and dating to the first half of the 19th century.

The work depicts a classical and famous subject of ancient painting, the Guardian Angel together with his ward, a child.
In this painting, the Angel points to the sky with one hand and with the other holds the boy by the hand who in turn with the other hand holds a pilgrim's staff, symbol of the journey of life.
The Angel's gaze toward the child is full of sweetness and protective love.

The painting is unsigned, but the artist shows remarkable painting skill in brushwork and expressiveness.
