Description from the seller
Yoshitomo Nara - Do not Disturb (1996)
Artwork in excellent condition
The print was made on watercolor-type art paper
Size: 30 x 24 cm
In Do Not Disturb, Yoshitomo Nara explores the theme of inner retreat and passive resistance through a childlike figure that is both gentle and provocative. The character, with simple features and a closed or diverted gaze, seems to send the world a clear message: a refusal of interaction, a need for isolation and protection. True to his minimalist visual universe, Nara combines innocence with a silent challenge, creating a tension between fragility and determination.
The title acts as a symbolic barrier – “do not disturb” – reversing power dynamics: it is the child who imposes its limit on the spectator. Through clean lines, a muted palette, and a tone that is both tender and ironic, Nara evokes chosen solitude, emotional refuge, and the necessity of preserving one’s mental space. The work becomes a meditation on inner peace and personal autonomy.
