Original work on paper of great poetic and dreamlike strength, characteristic of the artist's sensitive universe.
This surreal composition presents an enigmatic, biomorphic assemblage: a central structure evoking at once a lighthouse, an industrial tower, and an alchemical still, interwoven with organic, skeletal and vegetal shapes. The background is treated with a smoky wash, creating a hazy, mysterious atmosphere that reinforces the dreamlike dimension of the scene. The precise line and graphic expressiveness are typical of the artist.
Condition:
Very good general condition. The paper is sound, the ink remains intense and well contrasted. No nicks, creases, or restorations visible. The work is presented in its original frame.
Provenance:
Work directly from the artist's studio, passed through the Tamara Pfeiffer Gallery in Brussels, which widely circulated his work from the late 1960s. The two stamps on the verso guarantee excellent authenticity.
Artist's biography
Eugène Eechaut (1928–2019) is a Belgian artist of French origin. Born in Raismes (Nord of France), he settled in Belgium where he attended evening classes at the Saint-Gilles Academy (Brussels) while largely self-tudying his training. Painter, draftsman and watercolourist, he developed a personal oeuvre between free figuration, poetic abstraction, and fantastical surrealism. Influenced notably by Gromaire and Roger de La Fresnaye, he draws inspiration from the landscapes of the North, biomorphic compositions, nudes and the world of insects.
Member of Group Jecta since 1968, he exhibited as early as 1969 at the Tamara Pfeiffer Gallery in Brussels alongside notable figures such as René Magritte (with whom he maintained a friendship), Jean Cocteau, Ambrogiani and many others. Throughout his career he participated in numerous exhibitions across Europe and his works were included in prestigious collections, including the Prentenkabinet in Brussels. His graphic universe, elegant and dreamlike, blends finesse of line with poetic intensity.
