Description from the seller
Original gouache painting on paper well framed by Robert LEPINE (1929-2017)
Marine Landscape: Beach and sailboats.
Condition: excellent
Work format: 25.3 cm x 45.5 cm
Overall size: 45.8 x 63.8 cm.
French painter renowned for his landscapes and marine works. Based on the Côte d'Azur, he established his studio in Menton, a town that profoundly shaped his work and his life. Alongside his artistic career, he was also a passionate chess player, notably creating the official poster for the Menton International Meetings of Francophone Chess in 2016, one year before his passing at the age of 88. His artistic style expresses itself mainly through watercolor, his preferred technique, which he handled with vivid strokes to capture the transparent light of the South. He also used India ink to highlight his drawings and occasionally painted in oil. Although deeply attached to figurative style, he also ventured into geometric and lyrical abstraction during his career. His favorite themes included ports and the architecture of the Côte d'Azur (Menton, Villefranche, Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat), but also the landscapes of Corsica and Brittany. Today, his watercolors, inks and lithographs regularly appear on the art market at public auctions in France.
