Description from the seller
Large lead crystal pitcher/decanter with over 33% lead content, mouth-blown quite thick, cut with beveled edges and a round base. Signed under the base Val Saint Lambert, probably dating from the 1940s–1960s. A world-renowned Belgian glassworks founded in 1826. It is often described as the "Baccarat of Belgium" for its exceptional quality and its status as the official glassware supplier to the Belgian royal family.
The cursive signature, acid-etched, is the standard mark used by the company for much of the 20th century. High-end crystal houses such as Val Saint Lambert signed only their flagship pieces, finished by hand.
This is indeed a remarkable glass object. Given its tall, narrow silhouette and its distinctive design features, it is a carafe or red wine decanter. The tall, slender body was designed to bring elegance to a formal table. Optical ribs: the "columns" or vertical ridges that run along the body are a classic decorative technique. They catch the light and give the piece a sense of height. The C-scroll handle is applied separately, a distinctive feature of hand-blown glass. By carefully examining the junction between the handle and the body, one can often notice slight irregularities due to the hot glass fusion.
Measurements: height 49 cm x diameter 11.8 cm.
