Otodus megalodon tooth, specimen Megalodonte, from the Neogene Miocene (23.03–5.33 million years ago) Indonesia, height 13 cm, authentic/original, restored with localized root restoration and minor enamel touch-ups.
Description from the seller
Carcharodon megalodon tooth – discovery on the island of Java, Indonesia.
Splendid fossil tooth of Otodus megalodon, the great extinct prehistoric shark from about 3.6 million years ago.
Conditions:
Specimen in good overall preservation state. It shows localized restoration in the root area and small targeted interventions on the enamel. The bourlette is authentic, clearly visible and intact — an element that confirms its collectible value.
Visible characteristics:
Enamel with amber/brown natural coloration
Serrations preserved
Bilobed root with sediment matrix still present
Notable dimensions, as evident from the hand comparison
Otodus megalodon (the species name, megalodon, derives from Greek and means "great tooth"), commonly known as megalodon, is an extinct species of giant shark that lived from the early Miocene to the early Pliocene, about 23–3.6 million years ago (Aquitian–Zanclean), whose large fossil teeth show it had a cosmopolitan distribution. In the past it was thought that O. megalodon belonged to the family Lamnidae and a close relative of the great white shark (Carcharodon carcharias), but subsequent studies reclassified it within the extinct family Otodontidae, a family that split from the lineage of the great white shark during the Early Cretaceous.
Estimates of the megalodon’s size vary depending on the method used, with maximum total length projections between 14.2 and 20.3 meters.
