Description from the seller
Antoine Stevens – "Skateboard", 2022
Acrylic on wooden skateboard
84 × 21 × 1 cm
Unique work – signed
This Antoine Stevens piece reinterprets the emblematic object of urban culture to make it a true painting support. On this skateboard deck, the artist unfolds an intense and fragmented female portrait, nearly appearing, where the gaze becomes immediately the emotional anchor of the composition.
The painting blends drips, overlaps, spontaneous gestures and graffiti- and street art-inspired projections, while the shades of turquoise, magenta, burgundy, black and white create a very contemporary visual vibrancy. The visible wood preserves a raw dimension that contrasts with the delicacy of the depicted face.
Through this work, Antoine Stevens develops what today makes his work distinctive: a meeting between the energy of urban art and the tradition of the classical portrait. The verticality of the skateboard reinforces here the sculptural and dynamic aspect of the piece, transforming a daily object into an expressive and singular work of art.
Highly decorative and immediately identifiable, this creation fits perfectly into the artist’s contemporary universe, known for his powerful and emotional female portraits.
Antoine Stevens is a French artist from northern France, born in 1987. Originating from graffiti culture, he began in the early 2000s a studio-based practice mixing street art, contemporary portraiture and expressive painting. His work, exhibited in France but also in London, Monaco, Singapore or Luxembourg, is characterized by a fusion between urban techniques and classical references. Through his female portraits, Antoine Stevens explores emotion, gaze and the power of the feminine, in a painting that is both raw, sensitive and contemporary.
