Shigeru Hasegawa completed his master's degree in 1988 at Aichi Prefectural University of Fine Arts and Music and moved to Germany in 1989. He later studied at De Ateliers in Amsterdam, where Marlene Dumas also studied. Until 2004 he commuted between Japan and Europe.
