Lazare de Baïf’s De re navali & De auro et argento, a single 1549 edition in Latin with Greek original, bound in leather, 176 pages, 22.5 × 17 cm, illustrated with 27 woodcuts of ancient ships and maritime gear.
Description from the seller
[SOLD! Maritime, Seafaring, History, Law]
Baïf, Lazare de – De re navali & De auro et argento – 1549
An outstanding work of humanist jurisprudence and antiquarian studies of the 16th century: Lazare de Baïf (ca. 1496–1547), French diplomat and scholar, composed these Annotationes as annotated investigations of ancient legal concepts – including maritime law, captivity and postliminium, as well as questions concerning gold, silver, clothing and vessels.
The true jewel of the volume are the 27 woodcuts, including numerous sometimes full-page depictions of ancient ship types, oar and sail constructions, and maritime equipment. These illustrations constitute among the most remarkable iconographic sources on ancient seafaring in 16th-century printed literature and were widely re citar in later nautical works. They are complemented by depictions of ancient vessels, garments and everyday items, underscoring the antiquarian character of the work.
The title bears a woodcut printer’s mark. With 176 pages and 6 additional leaves, a textually and illustratively complete copy – a rare primary source for collectors of maritime, humanist and legal-historical literature of the 16th century.
22.5x17cm. 176 pp. Slightly rubbed full vellum binding of the period with handsome gold tooling on the covers. Sturdy block. Two ex libris on the flyleaf, somewhat browned, minimal worm traces at the lower free edge. Very rare!
