Rare revolutionary edition, published anonymously but the work of Baron Paul Henri Thiry d'Holbach (1723-1789), philosopher, encyclopedist, translator and scientific popularizer, German-born naturalized French. A materialist and atheist, d'Holbach collaborated with and financed Diderot and d'Alembert's Encyclopédie, and was a prominent figure of radical European Enlightenment.

In this work he proposes a social ethics that, in its radical immanentism, i.e., excluding any heavenly remuneration, is based on purely utilitarian foundations.
