A wooden panel from China, dating to circa 1910–1920, hand-carved relief, partially gilded and painted, dimensions 63.8 cm wide by 16.2 cm high by 3.8 cm deep, weight about 0.5 kg, used condition with visible age wear including cracks on the back and edge chips.
Description from the seller
Qing Dynasty to the early Republic period (approximately late 19th to early 20th century). Hand-carved relief sculpture, partly gilded and lacquered.
Material: wood (probably camphor wood or pine), gold leaf remnants, red and black lacquer.
Condition: Used with evident signs of aging. There are chips in the lacquer and in the gilding (see image_10.png), cracks in the wood on the back (image_4.png) as well as minor dents along the edges of the carving (image_7.png).
Description:
A horizontal, rectangular wooden panel that originally formed part of a larger piece of furniture (such as a bridal bed) or an architectural element (lintel) (image.png). The detailed carving shows a figurative scene with numerous people in traditional garments, moving beneath stylized pine trees and architectural fragments (image_2.png, image_5.png).
Notable features:
- The deep relief carving creates a sense of depth
- Gold leaf remnants, mainly preserved on the figures and decorative elements
- The back shows natural wood grain with old nail marks and simple dimensions: 63.8 cm (width) x 16.1 cm (height) x 3.8 cm (depth).
