Oil on canvas
50 × 70 cm
Signed lower right; inscribed, signed and dated 2025 on the verso
Here is one of the great original works by the renowned Ukrainian artist Demenko.
Two male figures dominate the foreground of a sunny tailor's workshop, captured in an instant of quiet tension. One turns to face the viewer directly with his shirt open across his chest, while the other stands with his back to us, his white linen slipping from his shoulder. Between them, there is a glance, a pause and an unresolved exchange. The clothes racks, display stand and framed pictures on the pale lavender walls firmly place the scene in an everyday commercial interior, yet the arrangement of the figures carries the concentrated weight of a history painting.
Demenko handles the academic tradition with ease and without stiffness. His palette is warm and precisely calibrated — bronzed skin tones set against the cool blues of denim and the soft greys of whitewashed plaster — and his brushwork moves fluidly between careful observation and confident abbreviation. Light enters from the tall windows at the back, completing the scene.
This is a compelling and technically accomplished figurative work, painted with the directness of a prima vista execution and the compositional assurance of a considerably more experienced artist.
