JEAN DUBUFFET - LARGE MONOGRAPH OF THE ART WORKS, MUSEE POMPIDOU, 2001, GOOD
No Reserve Price !
Art book of large format dedicated to Jean Dubuffet, a great French painter, a leading figure of the Informel and Art Brut movements. Comprehensive and exhaustive exhibition catalog devoted to the art of Jean Dubuffet. Original 2001 edition, Pompidou Museum, good overall condition, approximately 500 pages for about 3,000 kg of pages illustrated with Dubuffet's art.
Reference catalog of Jean Dubuffet's works, an exhaustive monograph, richly illustrated, of high quality.
Some descriptive elements:
"As part of the retrospective of Jean Dubuffet's work from September 13 to December 31, 2001, the Centre Pompidou publishes an important reference catalog that brings together a set of contributions from international authors. The text by Daniel Abadie and Sophie Duplaix, curators of the exhibition, and by specialists such as Hubert Damish, Michel Draguet, Henri Meschonnic, Thomas Messer, Gloria Moure, Lorenza Trucchi, Peter Weiemair, addresses the different periods of the work.
Richly illustrated, the catalog reproduces in large format and in color all the works exhibited. Numerous black-and-white photographs document a detailed chronology that covers all periods of the artist's life and, among other things, his links with major figures in the literary and artistic world of this century.
Enriched with unpublished correspondence and archival documents, it allows the evolution of art and thought of Jean Dubuffet to be followed. The catalog also includes a annotated bibliography that lists, in particular, press articles from Dubuffet's first exhibition at René Druoin in 1944 until the artist's death in 1985. A real research tool, it helps to understand the critical reception of the work over the years.
Undoubtedly, the Centre Georges Pompidou is returning to principles that had ensured its renown. One of the most tangible signs of this policy shift is found in the catalogs that accompany major monographic exhibitions. The one accompanying the Dubuffet retrospective (1901-1985) is a model of its kind. Through a series of short critical texts, the different aspects of this oeuvre are studied and put into perspective. The carefully edited iconography helps to better perceive the historical evolution of this artist who is today recognized not only as the "inventor" of Art Brut, but also for his sculptures made in public spaces. Yet, as this substantial volume admirably shows, many periods (paintings, drawings, sculptures) were practically unknown to us, especially the years 1939-45 when, suddenly, Dubuffet discovers the plastic powers of matter left almost raw on canvases of astonishing expressiveness. The whole is completed, as it should be, by a commented bibliography and an engaging biography. --Damien Sausset
Published on the occasion of the retrospective that marked, in September 2001, at the Centre Georges Pompidou, the centenary of Jean Dubuffet's birth, this volume reproduces nearly 400 works by the artist, including all those exhibited. Unpublished essays, reprints of earlier contributions, and texts by Jean Dubuffet himself offer a complete insight into a singular work that sought to free itself from any cultural shackles. Rich in testimonies, letters, and quotations, an abundantly illustrated biography also brings to life the journey of the master of L'Hourloupe, from the "Prehistory" to the last Non-places. "
