Robert Greter, an artist of Swiss origin, born in Lucerne in 1885, is mainly known for his small animalier sculptures in Liberty style.

In 1911 he participated in the Milan Annual Exhibition of Fine Arts with two bronze goat figures like this one. In 1912 he presented a white bear and an elephant in bronze. The signed version "RGreter" dated 1910 depicts the goat.

The sculptor has captured a daily, intimate moment: the animal taking care of itself without paying attention to who watches. It is an instinctive gesture, common in goats and sheep, which conveys immediacy and real life rather than a ceremonial pose.

The modelling with irregular surfaces and the dark patina of the bronze accentuate precisely this sense of movement and living matter, rather than a smooth figure.
