Description from the seller
The piece is an oil painting on canvas, originally affixed to a rigid pressed-cardboard support. aesthetically it is framed within European Post-Impressionism of the mid-20th century.
Technique: It highlights the use of a vigorous impasto technique, probably applied with a spatula or heavily loaded brushstrokes, which gives relief, dynamism, and a unique three-dimensional texture to the tropical foliage.
Composition: An enveloping path flanked by dense vegetation of palms, structured by a pronounced central overall perspective that generates an explosion of colors.
The reverse of the support reveals its true provenance—exceptional, incalculable documentary value—through a handwritten inscription in French: Kerényi- Lac Kivu - Aout (Août) 1941
Origin: The surname places the author in the orbit of the prestigious Hungarian pictorial school (Central Europe) of those delivering.
Context: Dated August 1941, the canvas was conceived in the midst of the Second World War.
The Lake Kivu region (Belgian Congo) / Rwanda served at that time as a strategic refuge and a haven of peace for intellectuals displaced by the old continent and European creators.
Evidence of the Era: The fact that the canvas is adhered to a rigid cardboard (visible from the back) is fantastic material proof of its temporal authenticity. In 1941, artists faced a severe shortage of fine art materials and were forced to optimize canvases over improvised cardboard from the area.
Today, this piece has ceased to be merely an anonymous landscape and has become a historical document of Late European Impressionism of the 20th century. (Late impressionism)
Highlights the use of a thick impasto applied with a spatula and very heavily loaded short brushstrokes. The author masterfully uses the effect of light filtered through the palms, generating a strong luminous vibration on the path. The brushstrokes juxtapose warm tones (yellows and ochres) with cool tones in the shadows, eliminating the use of black and constructing forms without rigid outlines, as dictated by the classic Impressionist canon.
It is shipped protected by Correos España.
