Title of the artwork: Resting Sheep on the Kent Coast / Dover
Technique: Oil on canvas
Year: 1858 (signed and dated bottom right)

For sale is a museum-quality and highly characteristic oil painting by the prominent British animal painter Thomas Sidney Cooper (1803–1902), Royal Academician.
This work comes from a family inheritance and depicts a meticulously detailed flock of sheep resting on a cliff above the English coast (near Dover/Canterbury). In the background the view opens to monumental chalk cliffs and the sea beneath an atmospheric, subtly pink-toned cloudy sky. Cooper’s mastery in rendering animal fleece and natural light is evident in every brushstroke.

Key features & provenance:
Signed and dated lower right: "T. Sidney Cooper 1858".
On the reverse of the canvas is the original stencil stamp of the renowned London art supply house: "Prepared by Winsor & Newton, 38 Rathbone Place, London". This dates the canvas precisely to the mid-19th century.
An antique metal artist plaque is attached to the frame.
The painting remains in unlined, original condition on its first canvas (not relined) and shows a beautiful age-appropriate craquelure. A prime investment piece for collectors of Victorian British art.
