Description from the seller
This little piece is based on the series The Four Seasons by the Brussels painter David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690). Around 1644 he made a painting of the old man draped in velvet and fur who leans forward to warm his hands at a brazier. His face is furrowed and wrinkled, but his fur-trimmed cap gives the impression of speed and strength, like a winter wind.
About the artist:
This 19th-century work can be attributed to the French artist and illustrator Eugène Auger (1847-1922), who became best known for his architectural drawings and book illustrations. As the son of a lampmaker and tin worker, he initially studied in Reims. He completed his training in Paris and took over the family business in 1881. After his retirement Auger settled in Trigny, where he could devote himself to his passion for drawing and painting. He carried out assignments for a number of local publications, including a Répertoire Archéologique of the city of Reims. His best-known paintings were made on commission for Hugues Krafft for the Musée Le Vergeur.
Conditieverslag: This painting and the accompanying frame are in good condition and show no visible signs of damage.
