After a successful career as a professional illustrator, Warhol achieved worldwide fame for his works in painting, avant-garde cinema and literature, fame that was reinforced by his savvy use of the media and his role as a guru of modernity. Warhol served as a link between artists and intellectuals, but also between aristocrats, homosexuals, Hollywood celebrities, drug addicts, models, bohemians and colorful urban characters. His influences included: Marcel Duchamp, Jasper Johns, Roy Lichtenstein, Truman Capote, Ben Shahn, Tom of Finland and Jack Smith.

Warhol used various media to create his works, including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography, silkscreen, sculpture, film and music. The Andy Warhol Museum in his hometown of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, houses an extensive permanent collection. It is incidentally the largest museum in the United States dedicated to a single artist.

During his life he was a controversial figure—some critics described his works as pretentious or as mischief—and since his death in 1987 he has been the subject of numerous retrospective exhibitions, analyses, books, and documentaries. Apart from fame and controversy, he is considered one of the most influential artists of the 20th century because of his revolutionary works.
