Description from the seller
Fascinating and rare seventeenth-century volume: the famous treatise on rhetoric and oratory by Matthäus Timpius, published in Amsterdam in 1642 by the renowned printing workshop of Hendrick Laurensz. The work is presented in two main parts, each with its own internal title page, gathered into a single, solid volume. The historic title "Dormi Secure" (literally "Sleep Quietly") was an ancient publishing device: it indicated to preachers, professors, and students that, by owning this book, they would find inside all the material already prepared and structured for their lessons or speeches for the following day, thus being able to sleep soundly. The volume collects 120 rhetorical themes; it is not a mere theoretical guide, but a true practical encyclopedia of Baroque knowledge.
Theology and Sacred Scripture: for sacred oratory.
Classical Philosophy and Morality: with deep quotations from the great ancient thinkers.
Law and Jurisprudence: for application in civil and academic debates.
Binding: Splendid contemporaneous limp parchment binding. The parchment has acquired a beautiful amber patina from time, with the classic raised nerves visible on the spine and the period title handwritten in an ancient script.
Interior and Paper: The paper is the typical seventeenth-century variety, heavy and rustling.
Signs of Time: Present are slight and fascinating handwritten ownership notes on the title page and rare marginal study notes, which do not impair readability. Some characteristic period foxing.
Pages 16 + 368 + 12 + 287 + 20 + 86 + 18 Complete Book
The packaging will be carried out with professionalism using the most suitable materials possible to prevent any damage during transport.
