Gérard Moortgat (1908/09-1992)
Gérard Moortgat (1908–1992) was a Belgian post-impressionist painter, originally from Melsele-Waas, mainly known for his landscapes, church interiors, scenes of art towns, and still lifes.
Artistic training
Places of study: the Academy of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean and the Schaerbeek Saint-Luc School. Influential teachers: he studied under painter Henri Logelain. Stay in Italy: he spent four months in Venice to study light under Caldorini. Works from this trip were exhibited at the Isy Brachot gallery in Brussels in 1949.
Styles and themes
Main themes: Rural landscapes, floral compositions, interiors of religious buildings, and picturesque lanes.
Geographic inspirations: The Ardennes, the Campine, Flemish art towns (such as the Beguinage of Lier and Ghent), but also Brittany and the South of France.
Style: His painting is characterized by a constant search for light and a textured post-impressionist technique in oil.
