Description from the seller
Artist: Henk Bloemhof (born 1945, Weststellingwerf, Netherlands)
Nationality: Dutch
Title: At the Coast
Date: 2000
Technique: Oil painting
Signature: Signed lower right “HB 2000” in paint
Description:
This surreal work by Henk Bloemhof portrays a hushed coastal scene in which human forms and elements of the landscape fuse in a disconcerting way. In the foreground lie undulating, skin-toned shapes reminiscent of a lying body or dune landscape. Over these, elongated hands with bright red nails rest, as if gently touching or guarding the landscape. Small transparent spherical forms on the fingers reinforce the mysterious and symbolic aura of the piece.
The background consists of a dark, ominous sky above a narrow horizon line of sea and shore. The rounded moon-like shapes in the sky give the painting a dreamy, almost cosmic atmosphere. Bloemhof thereby creates an imaginary world where sensuality, nature, and estrangement come together. The combination of anatomical detail and landscape elements evokes associations with the subconscious, desire, and the relationship between man and nature.
Through restrained color usage, soft transitions, and the surrealist composition, a poetic tension arises between calm and mystery, characteristic of Bloemhof’s magical-realist style.
Condition:
In good condition. Light signs of aging and use appropriate to the age. Surface shows minimal craquelure and slight differences in gloss. Frame with light signs of wear.
Stylistic note:
Henk Bloemhof is known for his surreal and magical-realist paintings in which human anatomy, natural forms, and dream imagery merge into a distinct imaginary reality. His work is characterized by organic shapes, symbolism, and a hushed, mysterious atmosphere. In At the Coast, this characteristic style is clearly evident: the painting balances between figuration and abstraction and invites the viewer to a personal interpretation. The 2000 work constitutes a strong example of Bloemhof’s poetic and surreal visual language.
