Bronze Tara deity head from Nepal in the Kathmandu Valley Newar style, dating to the mid-20th century (c. 1950), measuring about 12.5 cm high, 10.5 cm wide and 6 cm deep, in good condition and unsigned with no stand included.
Description from the seller
Head of the Tara deity
Mid-20th century (c. 1950)
Nepal, Kathmandu Valley style (Newar tradition)
Bronze / copper alloy cast in the lost-wax technique, with a nuanced brown patina
Height: approx. 12.5 cm x 10.5 cm x 6 cm
The face of the Tara goddess is characterized by features of great serenity, a classical idealization of Nepalese Buddhist art.
The almond-shaped eyes are half-closed, inviting inner meditation, topped with fine arches that meet at the root of a straight and aquiline nose. The lips, full, outline a gentle, tranquil smile. In the center of the forehead is marked the urna (the third eye or point of consciousness), here depicted as a small circular relief disk.
The head is surmounted by a tall, tripartite openwork crown (jatamukuta), adorned with stylized floral motifs and flame-like scrolls inspired by medieval (Pala-Sena) aesthetics. The ears with stretched lobes bear heavy circular ear pendants (kundala), typical of the iconography of female bodhisattvas.
Condition: Surface patina well established with slight golden nuances from wear on the reliefs (nose, cheekbones). There is a clean break on the upper part of the crown, at the central finial.
Shipped with UPS and insured.
