Description from the seller
The painting presents a half-length portrait of an elderly officer, presumably belonging to a hussar regiment, as suggested by the richness and style of the decorations on the uniform. The figure emerges from a dark, neutral background, following a convention typical of nineteenth-century portraiture, which concentrates attention on the face and attire. The man has white, voluminous, slightly unruly hair, and a face marked by age, with a direct gaze but veiled by fatigue, almost melancholic. Thin mustache and a lean physiognomy contribute to outlining an austere personality, perhaps accustomed to military discipline.
The uniform is the most distinctive element: a dark jacket adorned with elaborately intertwined gold epaulettes, typical of hussars, light cavalry units widespread in Central and Eastern Europe between the 18th and 19th centuries. These decorative elements, in addition to their aesthetic function, indicated rank and belonging to a prestigious corps, often tied to aristocratic traditions. The white collar and the black bow add a tone of formal elegance, while the meticulous rendering of the embroidery reveals the painter’s interest in material and ornamental details.
Stylistically, the work plausibly belongs to the first half of the 19th century, in a milieu between northern Italy and the Austro-Hungarian area, where this type of uniform was particularly common. The painting is realistic but not idealized: the face is not beautified but rendered with sincerity, allowing the signs of time and experience to emerge. The painting is in good condition, dimensions 65x53 cm.
