Description from the seller
IVORY AND DUTY OF BORGHESE: A SMALL LUTHERAN SWEDISH CATHEDRAL
Fascinating and refined exemplar of the Svenska Psalmboken, the famous psalter and hymnbook of the Swedish Lutheran tradition, officially approved by the Crown in 1819. The work here takes on an almost reliquary dimension thanks to an extraordinary devotional binding in carved ivory plaques, enriched by a relief-embossed cross and by elegant filigree metal clasps in a neo-Gothic taste. More than a simple liturgical book, this small volume represents an object of private piety and domestic religious status, typical of the Nordic Protestant culture of the nineteenth century. The whole possesses a strong symbolic presence: the milky white of ivory, the gilded edges, the almost monastic miniaturization of format, and the delicacy of the structure evoke both an aristocratic prayer book and a sacred case intended for daily personal use.
MARKET VALUE
Ordinary copies of the Svenska Psalmboken from the nineteenth century are relatively common, but luxury copies with figurative ivory or bone bindings, complete with original clasps and preserved in such elegant decorative condition, are decidedly rare on the antique market. For comparable examples, the value can be roughly estimated between 400 and 600 euros, with higher possibilities for bindings attributed to Scandinavian workshops or for provenance of noble origin.
PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION AND CONDITION
Devotional binding from the nineteenth century with stiff ivory plates, ivory-colored silk-backed spine, double metal clasp decorated with neo-Gothic pierced motifs, gilded edges. One clasp missing. On the front cover, a large carved relief cross. Frontispiece printed in red and black: “Svenska Psalmboken af Konungen Gillad och Stadfäst År 1819.” Internally with a red border typographic layout characteristic of Nordic devotional editions of the period. In old books, with a multi-century history, some imperfections may be present, not always noted in the description. Pp. (4); 8; 430; (4).

CONTEXT AND SIGNIFICANCE
The Svenska Psalmboken of 1819 is one of the foundational texts of modern Swedish Lutheran spirituality. It was promulgated during the reign of Charles XIV John and represented an official standardization of hymns used in the Church of Sweden. The volume unites psalms, moral hymns, Sunday meditations, gospel texts, and spiritual compositions intended for both liturgy and private family devotion. Particularly striking is the graphical quality of the edition: the pages are framed by a red typographic line that lends the whole remarkable proto-Biedermeier elegance. The red-and-black color scheme, rare in ordinary popular prayer books, emphasizes the sacred and almost miniature nature of the volume. The binding, however, represents the most extraordinary element. The use of carved ivory or bone plates recalls a luxury devotional tradition widespread in northern Protestant Europe between the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The cross applied in relief turns the book into a true cult object, while the metal clasps symbolically “close” the holy word. Similar objects were often gifts for confirmation, weddings, or family memory, intended for intensely emotional personal use.
BIOGRAPHY OF THE AUTHOR
This is not a work attributed to a single author, but the official psalter of the Church of Sweden, the result of collective revisions, ecclesiastical commissions, and royal approval. The Svenska Psalmboken of 1819 marked a crucial moment in Swedish religious and cultural identity of the nineteenth century, accompanying both liturgical and domestic life for generations of faithful.
PRINTING HISTORY AND CIRCULATION
The 1819 edition inaugurated a long series of reprints and adaptations of the Svenska Psalmboken, widespread throughout Swedish territory. However, most surviving copies feature modest leather or paperboard bindings. Luxury copies with ivory/bone coverings, gilded edges, and metal clasps were produced in limited quantities for private patrons, elevated bourgeois circles, or ceremonial use. The presence of the carved applied cross makes this exemplar particularly scenographic and rare compared with standard production.
