The Reader
Oil on canvas
Signed and dated 34
Canvas dimensions 47x57 cm
Frame dimensions 60x70 cm
Description of the Work
Splendid and intimate oil painting on canvas by the renowned Belgian painter Éliane de Meuse (1899-1993), winner of the prestigious Prix Godecharle in 1921. The work depicts a young educated reader in a moment of absolute quiet and concentration, elegantly reclining on a chair in a room.
The style is strongly indebted to Impressionism and to moderate Fauvism typical of the Belgian school of the 20th century. Free brushstrokes, rich in body and highly expressive, construct the volumes through skillful contrasts of light and a palette dominated by warm, earthy tones. This is a work of great atmosphere and vintage charm, ideal for enriching 20th-century art collections.
The back of the painting offers interesting details about its history: on the frame is clearly visible the historic stamp impressed "Schneider Farbwaren - Bern", testifying to the period Swiss support.
Condition:
As shown in the photo, there are defects, some small holes visible when held to light
Important Information for Bidders
Dear collectors, being a private seller, please read the following notes carefully to ensure an ideal transaction for both parties:
The antique frame visible in the photo is included in the lot as a pure gift from me; it is not part of the sale, does not determine its value, and, due to its delicate nature, is not covered by insurance.
Any defects already present on the frame are not reported, and any damage to it during transport will not be considered for claims or returns.
The item will be shipped from Geneva, Switzerland. For this reason, delivery times to European Union countries may be slightly longer than usual due to standard customs procedures. I also remind you that, since Switzerland lies outside the EU customs area, import duties, local VAT and customs taxes are the sole responsibility of the buyer and will be charged by your country's authorities upon delivery. I recommend informing yourself in advance to avoid surprises.
As an alternative to shipping, if you have the possibility, in-person pickup in Geneva is always the option I prefer and strongly recommend: it will allow you to eliminate transport costs and ensure maximum safety for the work.
