Frans Manders was born on January 8, 1939, in Helmond. Frans is self-taught and only settled as an independent artist in 1978. Initially he worked as a graphic designer and illustrator. He had training in advertising and publicity at the Academy for Industrial Design in Eindhoven, where he studied, among others, with painter Kees Bol. Later he took lessons from draughtsman Otto Dicke and painter Dorus van Oorschot. The latter artist from Schijndel has been decisive for the direction Manders chose: the tradition of the School of Barbizon and the Hague School.
After the fire of his studio in 1995 his work changed markedly. His paintings became increasingly colorful and abstract. He frequently worked in Provence (Vaucluse), where he developed his style and color palette into a true impressionist. Manders is primarily a (traditionally formed) landscape painter who paints from feeling. He is especially appreciated for his Brabant works. On his 70th birthday he was knighted for this.
In the Peter van den Brakencentrum, his recent work is shown. The subjects of the paintings range from French and Brabant landscapes (including sunsets) to water lilies, flower still lifes, and harbor scenes. The artist is present every Sunday.
