AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

For sale is an authentic antique ship's compass / marine compass from the Scottish maker Matheson, Leith, with the original labeling:

“Matheson, Maker to the Royal Navy, Leith”

The compass dates, in my estimation, from the late 19th century, presumably the period between about 1885 and 1900.

It is a classic nautical gimbal compass with a brass finish and a genuine wooden carrying case.

The design of the compass rose with a fine degree scale, traditional wind directions, and a decorative Fleur-de-Lis north marker corresponds to typical British naval instruments of that era.

The compass is in authentic, unrestored original condition with a beautiful age-related patina.

Included:

- original compass rose
- original brass gimbal suspension
- glass cover
- original wooden carry case

The surface shows age-appropriate signs of use and oxidation, fitting for the age of the object.

The inner mechanism is in need of restoration and the fluid is no longer present. The item is therefore explicitly offered as a historical collector’s item and restoration project.

Nevertheless, the compass possesses a very decorative and authentic appearance.

Included in the sale:
Ship's compass
Original wooden carrying case
