(*) Gustav Klimt, born in 1862 near Vienna, is one of the great figures of Art Nouveau, also known as Jugendstil. Trained at the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts, he soon developed a unique style combining the figurative and the ornamental. After cofounding the Künstlercompagnie, he already stood out in 1886 at the Burgtheater. Deeply affected by the loss of his father and brother, in 1897 he participated in the creation of the Vienna Secession, which became a benchmark of the movement. Klimt exhibited bold works here, before continuing his path by founding in 1905 the Austrian Federation of Artists. Until his death in 1918, he enriched Art Nouveau with a rich, sensual and decorative style, leaving a lasting mark on art history.
