Iron railway signal lantern, estimated period 1910–1920, origin Netherlands, in good used condition with its original oil burner.
Description from the seller
Antique railway signal lantern with coloured panels and original oil burner, circa late 19th / early 20th century.
The lantern is fitted with a red, green, amber and a tranparant panel and retaining its original oil burner inside. The lantern was designed to function as a portable signalling lamp, with each coloured panel giving a different visual signal when turned toward the viewer.
More specifically: The red, green, clear/white and amber/orange panels were used to give different signals depending on which side faced outward. The lamp could be carried by the top handle or placed down on its base. It has a heavy metal construction, ventilated top, oil burner, a mirror behind the flame to make the light more bright.
Condition-wise: it has a beautiful untouched look, with old black paint, wear, scratches, paint losses, oxidation and signs of real use. The panels seem to include later or replaced panes perhaps, but the whole thing has strong authenticity.
The oil burner is inside and looks like it can still be lit, but we have not tried it.
