Description from the seller

BRILLIANT, ABSTRACT BLACK AND WHITE PHOTOGRAPHY by René Maechler, published only once in Italy (so never reprinted and never published in other countries).

802 photo books from the M. + M. Auer collection, page 440.

IN MY OPINION ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL NUDE PHOTOBOOKS ever published (see pictures).

MY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

After the tremendous success of the first auction, 5Uhr30.com (Ecki Heuser, Cologne) now proudly presents the second edition of “Masters of Erotic Photobooks" on Catawiki.
Enjoy another highly personal selection of books dedicated to eroticism in all its beautiful facets - drawn from my private library and from various acquisitions over the past years.
A toast to love, passion, and desire!

VERY RARE ITALIAN VINTAGE PHOTOBOOK FROM THE 60ties.
The 1960s lasted from 1960 to 1969 and included the Vietnam War, the student movement and the sexual revolution.

5Uhr30.com guarantees detailed and accurate descriptions, 100% protection,
100% insurance and combined shipping worldwide.

Bruno Alfieri, Milano. 1965. First edition, first printing.

Hardback (as issued). 230 x 285 mm. 52 pages. 38 photos. Photos: René Maechler. Text in Italian.

Condition:
Inside clean with no marks and with no foxing, but with trace of use; pages stronger yellowed at the edges (often the case, production thing), throughout dog-eared at the bottom right corner. Outside with trace of use; stronger rubbed at the edges and at the corners. Overall very good condition.

Brilliant nude photobook, extremely hard to find in any condition.

'René Mächler, who was born in Zurich in 1936 and lives in Zuzgen in the canton of Aargau, has made a name for himself internationally as a consistent representative of 'concrete photography'. For years, his works have been shown in exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad and are represented in renowned public and private collections. Although concrete photography has repeatedly attracted attention, particularly in its relationship to modern art, it has only slowly penetrated the public consciousness as an independent artistic direction in photography. It is therefore not surprising that René Mächler's unique photographic oeuvre, which has been created in a continuous creative process over the last forty years, is only now being fully appreciated.
Following his studies at the State College of Photography in Cologne (1958-60), René Mächler consistently pursued his artistic path. Although photography as a depiction of visible reality formed the basis of his work for a long time, he increasingly focused on formal aspects and the conscious use of photographic means. Eventually, René Mächler abandoned the camera altogether and began to create photographic works using purely artistic methods, inspired by Constructivism and László Moholy-Nagy's concept of “pure light design” in the 1920s. Mächler also left behind the abstraction of reality and turned to “concretizations of the pictorial possibilities contained in photography” (Gottfried Jäger).
In other words, images created exclusively from the intrinsic elements of photography, light and light-sensitive material. Although Mächler's artistic work primarily explores the basic elements of classic black-and-white photography in the 'infinite expanse between black and white' - the title of one of his works - he always incorporates the latest technologies that are at least related to photography, such as video and digital images, into his rigorous, systematic image research. With his photographic working method reduced to the essentials and his consistent aesthetic approach, René Mächler has created an extremely diverse, dense and rich artistic oeuvre: from the serial luminograms to the constructive photograms on themes of basic geometric forms and the “Reflections” thematizing light itself, to the almost complete dissolution of the image in series such as 'The Disappearance of a Square' (1998). René Mächler's work may be a solitaire in the landscape of Swiss photography, but in our time of increasingly arbitrary and non-committal digital noise, it is more topical than ever: a strong, independent artistic position, an attempt "to counter the chaos of this world with an order of pure elements and exciting or balanced relationships". (Willy Rotzler).
