Cicero, Marci Tullii Ciceronis Opera Omnia, a four-volume Latin edition printed in Paris in 1566 by Jacobi du Puys, bound in later half-leather bindings and in acceptable condition.
Description from the seller
“Marci Tullii Ciceronis Opera Omnia, quae exstant”, 4 volumes, Paris, 1566.
A significant Paris edition of all surviving works of Cicero, in four large-format volumes, is offered for sale.
The first volume impresses with an elaborately designed woodcut title border, while the following title pages display the printer’s device of the publisher. The work is also richly outfitted with decorative woodcut headpieces and artistic initials.
This is the variant B, listed in the Italian overall catalogue (SBN), which was printed without the engraved portrait on the back of the title page.
Bound in later half-leather bindings with a leather spine and gold-embossed spine title. The bindings show clear wear as well as signs of aging and moisture, but are stable. The back cover of Volume 1 is somewhat spotted and Volume 2’s back cover has a few minor losses.
The pages are in an aged, used condition, uniformly slightly browned and sometimes foxed. In Volume 1 and on the first leaves of Volume 4 there are worm traces in the white margin. Volumes 2, 3, and 4 are water-stained, somewhat more so in Volume 2 and at the beginning of Volume 4. The end of Volume 2 shows marginal mold traces at the outer margin. Volume 1 contains occasional old notes in contemporary handwriting.
Collation:
Volume 1:
Eight leaves, 384 pages
Volume 2:
852 pages
Volume 3:
566 pages
Volume 4:
627 pages
Dimensions: 39.5 x 27 cm
