Artwork description:
In this extraordinarily color-intensive work, Peter Robert Keil creates an expressive female portrait full of theatricality, elegance, and spontaneous energy. The figure appears at once playful and monumental—a typical combination of emotional directness and stylized form language, characteristic of Keil’s works from the 1980s.
Particularly dominant is the oversized hat, whose luminous yellow and blue tones act like a graphic frame around the face. The bold black contours structure the image with a almost musical rhythm and give the composition its unmistakable dynamism.
The intense green of the background further enhances the figure’s radiance and makes the colors almost vibrate. The reduced, mask-like physiognomy with large eyes and red lips recalls influences from Expressionism, Pop Art, and modern theater aesthetics.
The white-pink striped coat creates movement and elegance at the same time and endows the work with strong decorative presence. Despite the spontaneous painting style, the composition possesses a remarkable balance between abstraction and figure.
A typical Keil work: impulsive, color-great, and full of immediate visual energy.
The composition exudes joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy—a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother struggled with her son in the final phase of the war, moving to West Berlin, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting—particularly in expressionist artists as well as the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him his first craft skills and painting techniques.
