Description from the seller
Pastel on paper “Arrantzales”, Basque School, 20th century – Spain
Technique on support: Pastel on paper
Title of the work: “Arrantzales”
School: Basque School
Period: Mid-20th century
Country of origin: Spain
Provenance: Private collection
Good condition considering its age and use
Overall dimensions: 46 x 55 x 4 cm.
Dimensions without frame: 26 x 35 cm.
Exceptional pastel on paper from the Basque School of the 20th century in which a genre scene is depicted, featuring a couple of arrantzales (Basque fishermen) in the foreground, working in a port beside several sailing ships. The traditional blue-painted vessels and the sober features of the characters are iconographic elements deeply rooted in the painters of this region, as is the txapela worn by both. The arrangement of elements in the composition, with a cropped perspective, adds dynamism and depth.
Although the style ranges between impressionism and expressionism, it is characterized by the treatment of light and atmosphere, with bold yet diffuse strokes in the background that try to capture the sea mist or the “wet” light so typical of the north of our country. Directly recalls the works of distinguished masters of the Basque School. Artists such as Alberto Arrúe, with his solemn harbor scenes and monumental sailors, or Bernardino Bienabe Artía, known for capturing the luminous vibrancy and the harshness of coastal work in the Cantabrian Sea, handled this figurative language and chromatic palettes. Ornate gold frame, characteristic of the early 20th century.
The shipment of the product will be paid by the buyer according to dimensions, weight and destination. Shipping costs include professional tailored packaging; and personalized shipping, with tracking number and warranty.
The frame that protects the artwork is offered as a gift, but it has value in itself. It is provided at no additional cost so that when your artwork arrives at your home or destination it can be displayed immediately. Any damage to the frame itself, that does not affect the integrity of the artwork, cannot be accepted as a valid reason to file a claim or request a cancellation.
