Paul Deltombe (1878–1971) is a French painter whose work traverses the major currents of 20th-century modern art. Trained at the Beaux-Arts in Lille then in Paris, he frequents avant-garde circles and exhibited as early as 1902 at the Salon des Indépendants. Influenced by Impressionism, Fauvism and Divisionism, he develops a personal style combining rigor of composition and poetry of color.
Based in Champtoceaux, on the Loire, he dedicates a large part of his life to painting the Loire landscapes, still lifes and intimate scenes. He also plays an important role in the decorative arts, notably in tapestry, which he reinvents with his wife Yvonne Berthault. Director of the Nantes École des Beaux-Arts from 1931 to 1943, he contributes to local artistic life while pursuing a discreet but profound body of work.
Paul Deltombe embodies a sensitive modernity, at the crossroads of the avant-gardes and tradition.
