Work description:

With “Blue Head” Peter Robert Keil reduces the expressive portrait to its essential elements: gaze, line, color, and emotional presence. The work appears both calm and intense—a striking combination of minimalist formal language and immediate expressiveness.

The monochrome color world of cool blues and whites gives the image a nearly meditative atmosphere. At the same time, the bold black outlines create a strong graphic tension, typical of Keil's late works around the turn of the millennium.

The direct gaze of the figure pulls the viewer directly into the image. The reduced physiognomy with the elongated nose, almond-shaped eyes, and intensely red lips evokes modern masks, urban drawing, and expressive pop aesthetics all at once.

Precisely the restriction to a few colors reinforces the emotional impact of the work. The picture is clear, iconic, and timelessly modern—almost like a symbolic image of silence, concentration, and inner presence.

An extraordinarily elegant work within Keil's expressive portrait series.

The composition radiates joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy—a tribute to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.

His artistically gifted mother made her way with her son to West Berlin during the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting—especially in expressionist artists as well as in the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him his first craftsmanship and painting techniques.
