Work description:
With this impressive portrait, Peter Robert Keil dedicates himself to one of the most important German contemporary artists: Georg Baselitz. The work unites expressive immediacy, reduced formal language, and intense color impact into an exceptionally powerful homage to postwar German art.
The face appears strongly stylized and almost mask-like. Luminous red, intense blue, yellow, pink, and white stand in a tense equilibrium and create a vibrating visual presence. Especially the oversized left eye dominates the composition and immediately draws the viewer into the image.
The striking black lines give the portrait graphical clarity, while the asymmetric facial division generates psychological tension. Despite the apparent simplicity, the work possesses enormous emotional density and monumental impact.
Keil here achieves not only a portrait of Baselitz but also a painterly dialogue between two significant positions of German Neo-Expressionism: spontaneous, raw, direct, and full of energy.
The work appears as a modern art symbol between personality, myth, and expressive abstraction.
The composition radiates joie de vivre, immediacy, and artistic directness – a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically talented mother struggled with her son in the final phase of the war as they made their way to West Berlin, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon developed an interest in painting – especially in expressionist artists as well as the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him first craft skills and painting techniques.
