Work description:
With “Romy Haag in the Studio,” Peter Robert Keil creates an extraordinary theatrical and at the same time intimate portrait of the legendary Berlin nightlife icon Romy Haag. The work combines expressive painting, glamour, and urban energy into a vibrant composition full of personality and staging.
The figure appears as a blend of stage star, muse, and big-city myth. Bold color fields in bright blue, intense yellow, deep black, pink, and red create explosive visual tension. The asymmetric facial composition and the exaggerated eyes give the work a dramatic presence between theater, fashion, and expressionism.
Especially striking is the half-closed eye with the long blue eyelashes, which gives the figure something both seductive and melancholic. The black silhouette in the foreground enhances the stage effect and recalls lighting, shadow, and staging of a Berlin night club.
Keil’s spontaneous black linework endows the painting with its immediate emotional force. Despite the expressive simplification, the personality of the depicted figure remains clearly palpable: extravagant, self-confident, and iconic.
The work feels like a homage to creative freedom and the eccentric art and club scene of Berlin.
The composition exudes joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy — a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother fought her way with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting — especially in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him initial craft skills and painting techniques.
