Description from the seller

【Item Description】

This work is a photolithograph by Go Mishima 【三島剛】 from the celebrated series “Mishima Gō Gashū Wakamono” 【三島剛画集 若者 / “Mishima Go: Book of Pictures of Young Men”】, published in 1972 by Daini Shobo, Tokyo.

The complete portfolio consisted of 24 prints, and works from this series are now regarded as rare collector’s items.

The composition depicts a fully nude, muscular young adult man standing with his back turned to the viewer, while looking over his shoulder in a powerful and commanding pose. The broad back, firm body line, and dynamic legs are rendered with remarkable precision across the full length of the figure.

The intricate black linework, including the meticulous depiction of individual body hairs, harmonises beautifully with the warm ochre tones of the skin. The profile of the face shows the red lips and sharp, intense gaze that are characteristic of Mishima’s distinctive style.

This is a striking example of Mishima’s mature visual language, combining physical strength, sensuality, and refined graphic expression.

【Signature】

Signed “三島剛画” 【Mishima Go ga】 in kanji, vertically on the lower right.

【About the Artist】

Go Mishima 【born Tsuyoshi Yoshida, 1924-1988】 is widely regarded as one of the most important figures in the history of Japanese gay art.

A close friend of the novelist Yukio Mishima, he adopted the name “Mishima” as a tribute. His work appeared in “Barazoku”, Japan’s first commercial gay magazine, and he later founded his own publication, “Sabu” 【1974】.

His influence on later generations of Japanese illustrators remains significant, and his work has attracted renewed international attention in recent years.
