Description from the seller
Arnold Hermann Ludwig Heeren. Essay on the influence of the Crusades. Paris, Treuttel et Würtz, 1808, xxii-513 pp.
A volume in 8vo (200x120 mm), brown morocco, smooth spine decorated (period binding). Wear and rubbing on the boards, spine sun-faded. Interior fresh, rare foxing.
Work by the German historian Arnold Hermann Ludwig Heeren, translated into French by Charles de Villers. The book answers a question posed in a competition by the Institute of France: to examine the influence of the Crusades on civil liberty, civilization, commerce, industry and intellectual progress in Europe.
Heeren defends a central idea: the Crusades should not be seen only as religious wars, but as a historical phenomenon that profoundly transformed medieval Europe. According to him, they favored the development of commercial exchanges between East and West, stimulated merchant cities — notably Italian — and contributed to the circulation of products, techniques and knowledge.
