Description from the seller
Antique French Bronze Bas-Relief Plaque – Head of Christ with Crown of Thorns – Signed M. Thomas (c. 1920)
In excellent condition – No reserve.
A beautiful and highly detailed French antique high-relief bronze wall plaque depicting the head of Jesus Christ wearing the Crown of Thorns. Executed in the refined French Academic tradition, the sculpture combines emotional realism with the subtle streamlined geometry associated with the early Art Deco period.
The deeply expressive facial features, flowing hair, and dramatic upward gaze create a powerful devotional presence. The sculptural quality of the relief is particularly striking, with strong depth and refined casting details throughout. Pieces of this type were often incorporated into ecclesiastical interiors, chapel altars, Stations of the Cross installations, or monumental wall crucifixes during the interwar period.
The plaque is cast in solid bronze and finished with a rich dark chocolate-brown patina. Natural verdigris oxidation has developed beautifully within the recessed areas of the hair and crown, enhancing the antique character and authenticity of the piece. The front is clearly signed in the lower right corner: “M. THOMAS / BRONZE.” M. Thomas was a French sculptor and foundry craftsman active in France during the interwar period (circa 1920–1930)
The hollow reverse retains remnants of its original wooden mounting structure as well as two historical machine mounting screws, indicating architectural or liturgical use.
A rare and atmospheric devotional bronze with strong decorative presence and authentic ecclesiastical character — a true eye-catcher for collectors of religious art, Art Deco sculpture, and French bronze work.
Condition: Excellent antique condition. Minor verdigris oxidation and light surface wear consistent with age. Please examine the photographs carefully as they form an integral part of the description.
Dimensions: 15.5 x 15 x 5 cm (height × width × depth).
Weight: approx. 635 gr.
Will be carefully packed and shipped with tracking.
In excellent condition – No reserve.
